These little cars in the rain are brilliant... DSC Off completely and they prove themselves very capable... You can hang the rear with some over enthusiastic throttle input and control the end result with some counter steering and throttle control... I can't wait to get this thing on a Skid Pan... For those interested in attending... click the link www.zwartkops.co.za/calendar/action~oneday/exact_date~2015-10-11/Great opportunity to get to know your car and build your confidence as a driver... Hoping to see some forum members there.

Skidpan in an MX5 is always a riot, particularly if you have slightly less grip on your tyres. I'm at pretty much every track day with mates in amongst the thousands of Toyota 86s... Track is also brilliant and Zwartkops isn't that difficult a track to learn!

Awesome stuff, looks like you have the control of that beast down pat! I don't use anything other than first. Need a lot of space for 2nd gear slides, only if they have the whole pan open do I try hook up some second gear stuff. My biggest problem on the pan is how rubbish my handbrake is. Makes doing super tight turns next to impossible

What's the issue with your handbrake ? how does your prop and diff hold up to the constant drifting ?

Ya I'd imagine so much weight and length is rather hard to be precise with in such conditions. When I gave the 911 Carrera S a go a while ago I noticed just how precise your throttle control had to be in comparison.
My handbrake will hold the car when stopped, but for locking the rears going into a tight 180 for eg there's nothing doing (yes the clutch is dipped for it). I end up clutch popping the car out and just getting my transitions right. I've had Mazda tighten it numerous times, but it never makes much difference unfortunately.
Been skid panning an average of probably once ever two months for a couple of years now. Never had any issues with the prop or diff during that time and the car has 147k on the clock now. Only mechanical failure I've had on the car was the radiator cap failing and exploding cooling fluid all over the engine bay. It's actually a weakness in the design of the NC and often goes between 120 and 140k due to the positioning of the radiator. Cost about R1700 to fix at Mazda including labour.

Wouldn't think for a second that your handbrake was up... Hahaha Did you test the head gasket after it failed ?

Mazda did a test for me and said everything was 100%.
Luckily the pressure gauge in the NC is right in front of the driver so having that early warning helps more than the generic engine warning lights, especially as at highway speeds (when it happened) the car felt fine and being air cooled at that point meant engine temps didnt sky rocket right away.

The scary part is I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO A SKID PAN !!! And I really want to go one day, maybe alone at first so I can experiment and not make a fool of myself

It can be very daunting going to a skid pan/track day for the first time. I was kaking myself the first time I took to both, however it's totally worth it! The best part is that everyone there is totally friendly and if you just find an experienced driver they'll be more than happy to jump in with you and give you tips. People at the skidpan are hardly pro drifters so you'll see everything from specific drift machines to Hyundai Getz's taking to the pan! Also remember you don't get out of first so crashing isn't a risk either. In summary, it's almost impossible to make a fool of yourself Additionally for those track inclined, Zwartkops makes driving instructors available to "rookies" for free!

Put the MX-5 and the RS on the Dyno over the weekend...
It made a respectable 84wkw and 141wnm... RS made 173.4wkw and 394wnm
Also managed a 16.4 1/4 mile on the Torque app and 8.6 0-100 time... It launches incredibly fast at 5500rpm...
Had a run with an ST225 and stayed in front till end of 2nd where he opened a car length on me before we needed to slow down...
Raced the wife with her driving my Megane RS and she came to fetch me in 2nd... 3rd gear was just overkill as she boosted away from me with minimal effort...
All in all given the altitude losses I'm still very surprised with the MX-5... Fantastic little car...

And I really want to go one day, maybe alone at first so I can experiment and not make a fool of myself The only fools are those who never learn... When you're up for it and lets make an event of it and see if we can all make it that day... In my Lumina I'd drift the entire pan without touching my steering wheel... Just throttle input and full opposite lock... I'm sure the MX-5 will be even more fun given how small it is... Gives you a lot more confidence when you're driving in hazardous conditions...

Oh I tested the handbrake in dry weather on tar and it bites... Screeches with a hard pull... Should be fine for the Skidpan...
