Recently I noticed a rubbing sound coming from the rear of my car. I initially thought it was wheel bearings going on the car (it wasn't) and so did some investigation into the subject, with the following being my findings. - Everyone and their dog claims you need to replace the entire wheel hub, not just the bearing itself. Checked multiple forums and Mazda themselves on this.
- It is actually possible to buy just the wheel bearing from www.onlinemazdaparts.com (part 5), however I have no idea who would install for you.
- The process of replacing the entire wheel hub seems pretty simple, only tricky part is handling of the brakes. Plenty of Youtube videos on this, however I found nothing on replacing ONLY the wheel bearing component.
- Prices of wheel bearings and the hub unit as a whole fluctuate vastly online, shopping around can really save you bucks if this is the route you go.
- Regardless of where you buy from, IT WON'T BE CHEAP. Considering just the rear bearing alone is around $103 online, you get the idea of what you're looking at.
- Finally got a quote from Eagle Mazda on both the front and rear wheel hub assembly (29/09/2015).
- Front was R1587 each
- Rear was R4577 each
- Installation R678.50
Moral of the story, not everything on an MX-5 is cheap and if you think your bearings are on their way out, start saving!!

Well I found loads of youtube videos on how to change the whole hub (which seems pretty easy), but nothing on opening it up and getting at the bearing itself! Mine has 148,000 on the clock now, been out of warranty and maintenance plan for years! I win
