Although I never owned a MX5 (I'm to tall for the little buggers) I've had 12 Mazdas or Mazda badged as Fords since 1980. My family was introduced to a very unknown Mazda brand in 1969 when grandad bought a 67 B1500. As a family we had plenty Mazdas since then. I learned to drive in my dad's 1970 F1000 Bronco PV & 72 B1600. Personally did more than 2.5m km in my 12 Mazdas. Only other cars I ever owned were two extremely troublesome BMW 528i.
I did a lot of consulting in the motor industry in the late 80s & early 90s including TSA & Samcor.
