4 Cups holders in a 2-seater car :/ what was Mazda thinking ? My center console clip has also broken so i can put much in there without it "catching" on whatever is in the holder .
My car has a Tan/Brown interior but found this on the net
This shows the cup assembly after being unscrewed from the console
.
The side nearest to you has the rail for the sliding lid still attached. The far side has the rail removed and you can see the small oblong holes that the rail clips into. Removal of the rails is easy, they are held in place by small moulded in hooks, you can push them out OK.
I wanted to dismount these rails to allow me to cut out the cup holder moulding as wide as possible so that my ally box would fit up against the underside of the rails . I also cut out the front of the moulding where the catch fits. I cut the moulding with a rotary craft tool (drill) using the 3 cm (1 inch) circular saw attachment. I was left with a flimsy looking piece also seen above.
As you can see I had almost cut off the two front moulded in fixing brackets but this didn't matter as you will see later. I cleaned up the edges where the rails fitted and slotted them back in to the flimsy bits. Then I refitted this part back to the underside of the console. I cut off the latch on the sliding door removing as much material as I could without breaking into the "finger hole" I trimmed up the finger catch and glued it back onto the lid just for cosmetic purposes. I also cut back some of the small box on the console where the latch goes into ,then I measured the aperture for the box.
At the front behind the window switches there is a very convenient lip behind which you can fit the box, at the sides you can fit the box on top of the lid guide rails, at the rear I went as far back as I could without fouling one of the wiring assemblies. The bottom base of the box is narrower than the top to allow for clearance.
I made the box from 1mm alloy sheet but in 3 parts
First part was U shaped for the front and rear. Second part was for LH side and overlap of base (just makes it easier). I left the third part (RH side) until I had made 2 small bracket to bolt down on top of the 2 bits of the moulding that I nearly cut off earlier and 2 brackets the secure the rear of the box. I used epoxy bonding glue suitable for metal. I screwed the brackets on to the console before gluing to the box so that I had a perfect fit Then I made and fitted with the epoxy the final side of the box.
I trimmed the box with stick on felt.
Final results ...
I will be trying this on my car soon ,i will try take my own pictures maybe or a video and see if i can upload it I am just waiting for a cable (To add USB and AUX to standard MX-5 radio)
